Turmoil in Egypt - are the artifacts safe?
Political and social unrest in a nation takes its toll on its people and economy. In some cases, it can also damage the national treasures of that country. During the time the United States invaded Iraq and overthrew Saddam Hussein's government, a great deal of museums were looted, with many priceless and ancient artifacts stolen or destroyed.
After the overthrow of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarek following weeks of social unrest, many wondered how the museum would fare.
According to Zahi Hawas, Minister of the State for Antiquities, twenty-two artifacts including pottery created by the Hyksos and Bronze Age coins were taken during the period of unrest, along with a small statue of King Tutenkhamen. International police agency Interpol has been informed of the crime, and will seek to return the items to the museums they were stolen from.
